Frequency of Servicing Trailers

All utility trailers require regular servicing to keep them safe and functional. The frequency of service depends on how often the trailer is used, the weight of cargo it carries, and the operating environment. At West Texas Trailers, we recommend these general maintenance timelines: 6 to 12 months, depending on use, or every 10 to 12,000 miles.

A basic checkup should be done monthly, especially if the trailer is used constantly. This involves visually inspecting key components, such as tires, studs and lug nuts, lights, brakes, and the trailer's overall structure. Frequent use can lead to wear and tear, so monthly checkups help identify small issues before they become major problems. 

 More comprehensive checks should be done every six to twelve months to avoid trailer repair. These inspections should focus on the trailer’s mechanical components, including bearings, brakes, suspension, and electrical system. Servicing might need to be done more frequently in colder climates or areas with harsh road conditions to counter the effects of rust, ice, and road salt.

 Utility trailers should undergo a thorough inspection at least once a year. This yearly servicing includes checking the wheel bearings, axles, suspension, and frame for damage or rust. Annual inspections may also involve testing the braking system and electrical wiring for signs of wear. This inspection is often part of a Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance check for commercial trailers. 

 Preventing issues before they occur is always better than reacting to a problem after it has happened. Regular trailer repair and the following preventive measures will help extend the life of your trailer and ensure it remains roadworthy: Never under any circumstance exceed the weight capacity of your trailer, always double-check that your trailer is properly coupled to the tow vehicle, this includes the coupler being properly locked in place over the correct sized ball with a safety pin in place, safety chains crossed and hooked up to the tow vehicle, and the emergency disconnect cable connected to the tow vehicle frame. Make sure your hitch and ball are rated for your trailer's gross weight capacity. Trailer wiring plugs and safety chains should have enough slack in them to allow for turning but not so much that they are dragging. Remember to raise your jack up all the way before getting on the road. Lastly, make sure your load is evenly distributed front to back and side to side and properly secured.
